The Journey into the Maximum Aperture...

Its been a long time since i did some portraits both rural and social. Last weekend I had an opportunity...

A prime lens, a maximum aperture of F1.2...the 85mm f1.2L mark 1 is truly a remarkable lens. I had a chance to borrow this lens from a friend and was astonished by its depth of field, clarity and colors.

This is my journey into the world of maximum aperture. All shots are taken from f2 to f1.2 mostly at f1.2 with iso50.

Thanks for viewing.

A cross between Urban & Rural > Country Life and Photojournalism > People, UNADORNED JOY by ~EdwinMartinez is a wonderful depiction of what must be a fun time for those boys! I especially appreciate the focus and the soft tones within the picture. I hope you do too! ( Suggested by Zugo and Featured by Helewidis )

Thank you so much for those who commented, im grateful on the DD and would like to thank those who visited. To answer your questions;

1. the photo was taken in Pagsanjan, Laguna in the Philippines.

2. The white stripes are barbed wires melted by the maximum aperture of the lens. The difference of the 85mm f1.2 and 50mm f1.8 is considerable. There is an 85mm f1.8 it also but this was taken by an f1.2. Colors is also different since i own a 50mm f1.8, the 85mm is an L lens or Luxury lens of canon which produces sharper photos and more vibrant colors imho.

Great job!
I like how he's staring directly at the camera, it's haunting. And also partly because I see a lot of kids like him everyday, and they have that look that keeps you gripped, and sort of unconsciously not want to look away. I dunno, I'm weird. But I never thought to take a picture. =P
Congrats on the DD! :D

Good framing, giving good composition.

Piercing eyes, and a sense of freedom. The boy in back, tho blurred, is important because his smile helps to characterize this moment of carefree youth!

Gotta say, the extremely low aperture does give it a great look. The location is ideal too. Leads me to think of summer days.

I like the POV of this! I will say that the lines across it are a bit distracting...can't tell what those are...

What is different about the lens people keep mentioning? (I know little of photography so I like to learn. :D )

Congrats on the DD!

:O Holy crap that's amazing.

<serious> I might go as far as to say that this is perfect use of ridiculously wide aperture, and wow it turned out nicely. :) This photo would be amazing just as a cropped standard portrait, but with this phenomenal composition it has amazing motion right up the boy. Once in a while I see a deviation I wish I could fav 1829074092387 times. Congrats, you have one. :) </serious>

haha I know what you mean! I am sure the $80 f/1.8 would get very very similar results though, keep that in mind :)

You could never results like this with the 50mm f/1.8. It is a very nice lens for the price, but the 85mm f/1.2L is almost incomparable with the 1.8. Especially since it's sharpest at about f/2.8 while the f/1.2 looks to be sharp even at 1.2, but of course it depends on whether you get a good copy or not :]

My friend has a 50mm f/1.8 that I have done tests on (mine hasn't shipped yet they still are out of stock) and it was as sharp at 1.8 as it was at any other aperture. I couldn't have asked for any sharper. I am sure that the 85mm f/1.2L is a MUCH better lens but hell, you could buy 22 50mm f/1.8 lenses for the price of ONE 85mm f/1.2L lens.

Mine is almost as sharp at 1.8 as any other aperture, but it's just a wee bit softer. Tack sharp at 2.8 though :]
That is true but you do get what you pay for with lenses. If someone had the money they would be better off buying the 1.2 then the 1.8.
