三仙台Sansiantai | Playground of the Immortals
I just got back from Taiwan last February 24 to 28, 2011. This is another safari of people who share a common passion, to explore and capture locations that are iconic and prodigious. We planned this activity for a month, researching and evaluating. Together with me are three of whom I consider as the brightest and most persistent Chasing Light alumni and co-Pipho member namely Patrick Ong, Melvin Esteban and Bong Bajo. I really consider them as my peers rather than alumni as they have developed their own vision and style.
Sansiantai (Chinese 三仙台), Taitung, Taiwan is situated at the 112-kilometer mark on the coastal highway, Sansiantai consists of a headland facing a small island in the sea. The three huge rocks that make up the island's most prominent feature have given rise to a local legend that three of China's Eight Immortals once landed there. Hence the name of the island, which means "Terrace of the Three Immortals".
The island was once connected to the headland by a neck of land that has been eroded away. It is now connected by a red, scalloped footbridge. The bridge itself is unique, known as the Eight Leaped Bridge, the architectural design is similar to the ancient designs of temple bridges in China, Korea and Japan.
And the island has a network of footpaths for viewing its geological features such as potholes, sea-eroded caves and trenches, as well as rare coastal vegetation. The island is surrounded by coral reefs and a multitude of tropical fish, making this an ideal spot for diving.
This was our playground for almost 3 days. From cloudy, sunny and big swells of waves, we explored the area to a point that some of our team mates were washed by big waves. So we would like to present our images and more, of this mysterious and epic playground of the Immortals.
